Chemistry of Fire - Keeping Our Buildings Safe
Learn the beginnings of the materials known as firestop as we examine the tragic hotel fire at the Las Vegas MGM Grand in 1980. This disaster killed 85 people, the majority being overcome by toxic smoke and gas making its way through the hotel via open shafts and wall gaps. Explore the changes to the building codes over the past 30 years and see the advances made in the firestop industry keeping us and our buildings safe.
Sandy Straub
Sandy Straub is the Construction Sales Manager for Life Safety Services, LLC. LSS is a nationwide, full-service barrier management company keeping buildings code compliant through safety inspections, repairs and installation of firestop, fire doors and dampers as well as multiple safety consulting services.
Sandy has been working in the construction and real estate development industries for the past 15 years. Since starting at Life Safety Services, she has taken on the task of developing the construction arm of the company working with General Contractors, subcontractors and design teams throughout the Eastern US. Through education and collaboration with LSS partner companies, Sandy focuses on increasing the awareness of properly installed firestop and its importance to the safety of buildings and their occupants
Kathy Horneij
Kathy Horneij is the Territory Manager for Specified Technologies, Inc. (STI Firestop). Kathy has represented STI for 13 years currently in the Alabama, Florida Panhandle and Tennessee markets.
Kathy trains contractors, architects, engineers, distribution, hospitals, etc. on all aspects regarding Firestopping and is FIT 2 trained. Kathy provides solutions for UL Systems as well as engineering solutions for breaches in the integrity of fire and smoke rated construction.
Kathy also specializes in providing long term solutions for building owners after the building has been turned over to them.
