Anthony Scarpati, Branch Manager at Southeastern Traffic Supply will be sharing from his vast experience with the Sheriff's Office on how your communication and active listening skills could possibly save your life or someone else's.

Keep Calm and Communicate

Imagine this, put yourself in a 10 X 10 room with no windows, only a door. You’re sitting face to face with a subject that just murdered his entire family. The conversation you are about to have with him/her will last over (10) hours. Your Communication skills and your Active Listening skills will determine if this person goes free or will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Now comes the hard part, convincing him/her that I am their best friend, and everything will be alright. I must get this person to communicate with me. It all comes down to Negotiation, Communication and Active Listening.

Imagine this, you are standing in a beautiful park. A father of three (3) children is sitting on top of a park bench. He tells you that he lost his job his home is going into foreclosure and his wife served him with divorce papers this morning. He is holding a firearm to his head sobbing. He tells you that he is a failure, he wants to end it. Your Negotiation, Communication and Active Listening will determine if this person will ever see his children again or he dies.

I will be using my 24 years of experience as a Homicide Detective and Crisis/Hostage Negotiator to explain techniques to successfully Negotiate in the workplace, improve your Communication Techniques and how to use Active Listening for understanding, not just to respond. We will be discussing the following topics;  Crisis Negotiation, What is a Crisis?,  Six Stages to a Crisis,  How a Negotiation works, What makes a good Negotiator?,  Five phases of the Negotiation process, Conflict Resolution,  Conflict Resolution with Customers, Conflict in the Workplace,  Employees with a Bad Attitude, Dealing with Hostile or Angry People,  Upselling, Taking Personal Ownership of your Mistakes, Why is it Important to take Responsibility of your Mistake?, Tips for telling your Boss you made a Mistake.
